What is Trackflation

The term “trackflation” is a blend of “track” and “inflation” meaning the massive increase in track and field performance standards in recent years. The term gained large popularity online among young athletes around 2025.

Why is it Happening

Trackflation has been caused by the surge of innovation in track equipment, increasing number of athletes competing, and easy access to professional training tips online. Track and field equipment has been the biggest factor in this. Equipment like carbon plated shoes, lightweight mesh uppers, and light alloy spikes. With the gaining popularity of track, more and more students have started competing which makes the competition even tougher. Lastly many professional athletes and trainers post tips online and sell training programs online making it much more accessible to have professional training.

Where is it Happening

Trackflation is happening all across the United States in high schools and middle schools, but certain places like schools in Utah are seeing the most of it. Every race, insane records are being destroyed by young athletes pushing the sport to its limits.

The Evidence

In 2024 the average high school track mile time was 5:30 to 6:30 for boys and 6:00 to 7:00 for girls while in 2026 the averages were 5:00 to 5:30 for boys and 5:45 to 6:30 for girls. On the sprinting side of track for the 100 meter dash the average times were 11.4 to 12.2 seconds for boys and 12.5 to 13.5 for girls. In 2026 the average times for the 100 meter were 10.9 to 11.3 for boys and 12.0 to 12.4 for girls. This just shows how the expected average performance for athletes has risen. Overall trackflation is both a blessing and a curse because it brings all kinds of new innovation to the sport but also makes the competition much harder and less fun.
