Have Board Games Made A Come Back, If So Why/How
There is no denying that the recent age of “play,” has been fun, by all accounts video games are one of, if not THE most popular form of media that there has been or ever will be. But if we go back, back to a different time… Back when times were considered simpler by some people now, but were actually pretty similar with similar problems, we see that before the world’s most crucial time in the form of “The Great Depression.” This is the time when board games were considered one of the most popular forms of “play.”
Besides that radio rivaled it; because, A. It brought real-time audio entertainment, nationwide live news, and professional performance straight to a home, B. It provided no actual participation once someone got it set up and put on whatever channel they wanted, and C. It was just more advanced and more popular at the time of the 1920s than compared to board games. However, despite this, board games were still going through an economic boom from the 1880s to 1920s.
Games like, “The Mansion of Happiness”, “Parchessi/Ludo”, and two ones that are more popularly known now than they were then, “Monopoly/The Landlord’s Game,” “The Checkered Game of Life/Life. Things were looking up for board games, until… “The Great Depression,” a time of hardship and shared suffering around the globe; however, despite this and everything else that came with it, board games did not lose steam games like, “Risk,” “Scrabble,” and “Sorry!” The possibilities were endless at the time nothing could slow board games down.
However, there was and it was a time period known as “The Transitional Lull,” which was during the 1980s, the appeal just was not there anymore, and so it looked like the end of board games. But one thing, or should it be said, one game? In February of 1995 a public game was made, it was about gathering resources and land to see who could claim the most by the end, and the name of it was “Catan/Settlers of Catan.” And once again there was hope for board games, as after that specific when it started the Renaissance that has lasted and is still going.
So to answer the questions of have board games made a comeback? Should they have? And why. Yes they have made a comeback. It does not matter if they should have, because they are here to stay. And why? Well because board games are a crucial part of gaming and have strived to get to that point. That is why this article exists, not by asking any questions but to actually give the reason why board games still exist and why they will continue to exist all the way into the far future.
