Sony to stop production of physical discs
Sony announced on a blog post that with the release of the Playstation 6, they will be stopping the production of discs. Sony plans to move in a completely digital direction, starting in the month of Jan. 2028; Sid Shuman, the senior director of “Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications”, stated on the blog post that the removal of discs is a natural direction for Sony. Shuman also added that this transition to digital allows them to align closer to how gamers want to access and play games.
After the blog post had been released, those who played Playstation were outraged, giving Sony so much backlash that popular news outlets such as NBC news and Moneywise reported on it. Enraged gamers and consumers also took to social media platforms like X to explain their frustrations.
The removal of discs can also cause many other problems outside of enraged gamers and consumers. Companies like Gamestop and other companies that sell physical games will suffer greatly. Digital games will go up in price, even though they are already relatively higher than physical discs. Sony will also suffer from going digital; The removal of physical discs will only make Sony’s competitors like Xbox or Nintendo sales go up.
Consumers are now asking Sony to reconsider and address the issue, since the company hasn’t responded since the original post. 323,000 people signed a petition asking the company to respond and reconsider. Many people have presented the argument that with a disc one can actually own it, lend it, trade it, resell it, gift it, and even collect it; Without discs, one does not own the game and could have access revoked from the game which means one can only rent it. While digital is the future and could be a good thing, going digital could be your biggest mistake.
