West High Ranks 49th in state according to U.S. News

Every year, a countrywide ranking is done on schools by the U.S.News, and during last year's evaluation, MWHS was able to place 1st in Morristown, 49th in TN high schools, and 3,257th in the entire country. These statistics matter because they act as an entry to MWHS for new individuals; they also show West’s progression academically compared to other schools, and they act as a record of MWHS’s educational progress. Last year at West, approximately 38% of students took an AP exam, 24% passed an AP exam, and the graduation rate sat around 93%. Some more rankings that were given include placing 53 for college readiness at the state level, 51 for college curriculum breadth, 81 in the state assessment performance rank, etc. Dr. Sanders is pleased with the ranking but expresses, “We can do better.”

On average, MWHS has around 1,500 students per year; last year there were 1,458, approximately 378 freshmen, 362 Sophomores, 350 Juniors, and 368 Seniors. Among the academic data lies some on the student body itself at MWHS that includes an even boy: girl split, 2% Asian, 4.4% Black, 34.4% Hispanic, 52.9% White, etc. One of the most important statistics is MWHS’s test score comparison, due to it being one of the main criteria viewed when it comes to college admissions. In that regard, MWHS surpassed both local districts and the state level for mathematics 32:29:20; the same occurred for English 46:44:40, and for science MWHS was able to surpass the state level; however, they fell below local districts 46:47:40.
