For the second time in West High School history, students are allowed to decorate their caps. This tradition allows the graduating class to put a personal spin on their graduation ceremony, adorning caps with quotes, post secondary plans, or even thanks directed towards a teacher or family member. Teachers will pass out the paper copies of the form next Friday April 12 during TNN and students will have two weeks to complete the form and turn it back in to their TNN teacher for approval.
Mrs. Jennifer Cobb has laid out the guidelines for the graduation caps very clearly, they are as follows:
Expectations
● Designs must not be inappropriate or privilege will be taken away.
● No objects such as signs, stuffed animals, bells, flowers, or any 3D object may rest on the cap.
● ALL decorations MUST lay FLAT on the cap (nothing taller than the button in the center).
● Nothing can hang from any side of the cap, including around the edges. Decorations should not be
visible at eye level, only from above.
● Your cap cannot make noise such as bells or horns.
Cap Designs May Include:
● Thanks to a special family member, teacher, or friend
● In memory/honor of a special family member, teacher, or friend
● Recognize your post-secondary plans (college, trade school, military, work force)
● Recognize your high school sports, clubs, or fine arts
● Your graduation year
● An inspirational quote
● Leave it blank; decoration of your cap is not required
Cap Designs Must Be School Appropriate and CANNOT INCLUDE:
● Offensive language, flags, derogatory names/statements
● Any advertisement, symbols, abbreviations, initials, innuendos, words, slogans, patches or pictures
that refer to drugs or controlled substances, alcohol, or weapons or that are of a sexual nature
● Nicknames (unless approved)
● Gang-related signs/slang
● Boyfriend/Girlfriend names
● Political affiliation
● Threats against the safety or welfare of any person or group
Instructions for Decorating:
To prevent damage to your cap, Student Council will be providing each senior with a pre-cut piece of white poster board to use. You will receive your piece once your design is approved and returned to you. It is your responsibility to decorate your poster board to match your design exactly. After you decorate, you can apply the piece by CAREFULLY fitting it snugly around the button on your cap and securing it with double-sided tape or velcro. Don’t use glue! If your design needs to be removed at graduation, you should be able to do so and still get to walk with your blank cap. We will not provide you with a new cap should you damage yours in the decorating process. Jostens may have some extras available (which may require a rental fee), but please do not count on that. You will NOT be permitted to walk without a cap. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Ms. Cobb.
Approval Process:
ALL senior students must submit a signed design form to their TNN teachers. Your TNN teacher must approve your design by April 26th, 2024. Those approved designs will be passed on to Administration and the Student Council committee for final approval. No designs can be turned in for approval after April 26th, and designs that did not go through this process will not be permitted at graduation (regardless of meeting the expectations). Your design form will be returned with either denial or approval by May 3rd. If approved, you will also receive a piece of poster board, and you can begin decorating!
