The new anti-bullying law which was put into effect on July 1st has been the center of many conversations for the past month. The law was first signed by the Governor of Tennessee Bill Lee on May 1, and was passed on May 9. According to the Tennessee General Assembly, “expands the offense of harassment to include bullying and cyberbullying, according to the language in the legislation, and it will require law enforcement to notify the victim’s parents and/or guardians of the bullying situation at school if the victim is a minor.”

Teachers around the school have expressed gratitude for the law. Many said they were glad that the school was cracking down on behavior that could take away the sanctity of a student's learning environment. One student said: “I think the new rules are a good change. It lets kids that don’t have the courage to speak up against people bothering them have the law backing them when they tell someone to leave them alone.”

The reaction to the law is mostly positive. For more information, visit: https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=SB1887
