Covenant Health Helicopter Soars Into an Unforgettable Day at West High

The Morristown West High School practice football field turned into an outdoor classroom today when a medical helicopter landed on campus for a special student visit. Nurse Education students, Anatomy Students, Clinical Internship Students, Special Ed students joined in as well.

A Covenant Health helicopter arrived with a pilot and two operators, giving students a close look at the aircraft and the people who help keep emergency air medical services ready. For many students, it was the first time they had stood beside a helicopter, seen its equipment up close, or learned how a flight crew works during urgent situations. The practice field became a hands-on learning space for students.

The helicopter gave students a better sense of how fast-moving and organized emergency medical work must be. While the aircraft itself caught plenty of attention, the crew also helped students understand the role each person plays when a helicopter responds to a serious situation. The crew included one pilot which is responsible for safely flying the helicopter and making key decisions before, during, and after each flight. Two operators who support the medical mission and help manage the demanding work that takes place in and around the aircraft. Together, the team gave students a real-world look at a career field where training, teamwork, and calm thinking matter.

That detail mattered. Students did not just see a visiting professional. They saw someone who had once walked the same halls and later found a place in a high-skill, service-focused career.

Moments like that can make career paths feel more real. It is one thing to hear that students can go into healthcare, aviation, emergency services, or technical fields after high school. It is another thing to meet someone who started in the same place and came back as part of a flight crew.

The helicopter itself was the center of the day. Students were able to check out its features and get a better idea of how much planning goes into an emergency medical aircraft.

A medical helicopter is built for a very specific purpose. It must carry trained crew members, important equipment, and, when needed, a patient who may require care during transport. Space matters. Organization matters. Every part of the aircraft has a purpose. Students had the chance to look closely at details they might not notice. 

Mrs. Skeen, a health science teacher here at west, said, “Student's had smiles and laughter from being able to experience sitting in the driver's seat to sitting in the triage area to being strapped down on the cot.  Each student had the opportunity to sit in the helicopter and have their picture taken.” Overall it was an amazing experience for all the students and teachers who experienced it
