UT Promise is an undergraduate scholarship program guaranteeing free tuition and mandatory fees for qualifying Tennessee residents attending UT’s campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin, and Memphis. The University of Tennessee says, “This innovative scholarship will cover a student’s last-dollar amount of tuition and mandatory fees after other financial aid is applied (such as Pell grants, HOPE Scholarship or other institutional scholarships) to students who qualify for HOPE and whose family household income is under $50,000 a year. UT Promise is a student-success oriented scholarship program that requires students to complete volunteer service hours and meet with a volunteer mentor each semester to ensure a successful student
experience.”
“UT Promise is a great opportunity,” says Hayden Howard, current senior at West High. “Being able to go to school for free is honestly a great option, especially since student loan debt is so high right now.” Another student, Noah Heissler, agrees, saying, “Having a scholarship like UT Promise would be a great opportunity for me personally, I think it’s a good program.”
The Sycamore Institute of Tennessee says, “Tennessee’s median household income continued to increase — from about $51,000 in 2017 to more than $52,000 in 2018. In other words, half of Tennessee households earned less than $52,375 in 2018, and half earned more.” This means that there are a lot of people eligible for this scholarship. If your family falls in this category and you plan to go to college, talk to your school counselor about whether or not this is the right opportunity for you!
If one is interested in applying for the UT Promise scholarship, all one needs to do is go to the University of Tennessee website and submit an application. The deadline for these applications has been extended to Dec. 15, 2020.
